Dear Parents and Gaurdians,

Welcome to 6th Grade English Language Arts! I am excited to have your student in my class this year and look forward to a positive and productive year of learning and growth.

In 6th grade ELA, instruction is aligned with the California State Standards. Throughout the year, students will focus on developing strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This includes reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, analyzing how authors develop ideas and use evidence, and building vocabulary and comprehension skills.

We will be using the Amplify English Language Arts curriculum along with a variety of novels and texts throughout the year, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Esperanza Rising, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and other grade-level fiction and nonfiction selections. Students will engage in close reading, discussion, and analysis of these texts.

In writing, students will learn how to write clear and organized responses, arguments, and narratives while supporting their ideas with evidence from texts. Students will also practice revising and improving their writing over time. In addition, students will participate in discussions, learn to express their ideas clearly, and listen respectfully to the ideas of others.

My goal is to help students become confident readers, thoughtful writers, and responsible learners who can think critically and communicate effectively.

I believe student success is a partnership between school and home. I encourage open communication and will keep you informed about your child’s progress throughout the year.

Thank you for your support. I am looking forward to a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Merritt
